Why Midwives @ the Edges?
Midwives @ the Edges aims to network, catalyze, and equip midwives who are working at the "edges" - in places where maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity are the highest. We are particularly interested in leveraging faith-based organizations to catalyze change and help moms and babies in least-developed places
gain access to skilled midwifery care.
EVERY 2 MINUTES A WOMAN DIES AS A RESULT OF PREGNANCY / CHILDBIRTH
The Problem:
1 in 1000 births are attended by skilled midwives
1 in 500 women die as a result of pregnancy/childbirth (287,000 in 2020)
Almost 95% of all maternal deaths occurred in low and lower middle-income countries - at the edges.
Most of these deaths can be prevented with midwifery care. Midwives can meet about 90% of the need for essential sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health interventions. But...
There is a global shortage of 900,000 midwives. The shortage is most severe in low-income countries and Africa.
End Game:
In less than 30 years, Midwives @ the Edges will significantly contribute to lessening the shortage of midwives -- with a workforce that is well-trained, compassionate, and spiritually and emotionally healthy.
Global health systems can be revolutionized.
Women and babies will thrive and experience shalom.
Mission :
Midwives working at the edges are key to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals 3.1 and 3.2 and Midwives @ the Edges will sustain them - physically and spiritually so that they in turn are able to provide care that brings shalom -- perfect peace and well-being.
